General Motors may be weighing a new addition to the GMC vehicle lineup: a full-size crossover that would take its place between the Acadia and the Yukon.
According to a report by GM Authority, product planners at GM see an opportunity to introduce yet another three-row GMC crossover and cash in on the full-size crossover segment’s popularity.
Oddly enough, the space for a new full-size crossover in GMC’s lineup was created by changes to the current generation of the Acadia.
For the 2017 model year, GM downsized the new second-generation GMC Acadia significantly. The first-generation Acadia had a length of 200.8 inches and a width of 78.9 inches, but the second-generation model is just 193.6 inches long and 75.4 inches wide. The second-generation model remains a three-row vehicle, but its interior space has been reduced along with its exterior dimensions. It also lost quite a bit of weight in the process — about 700 pounds.
At its current size, the Acadia is similar to the Chevrolet Blazer and competes against vehicles like the Ford Edge, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Hyundai Santa Fe. GMC’s rumored new crossover would likely have the size to match other GM products like the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave and would compete against models like the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder.
It’s not clear if this potential GMC vehicle is already in the planning stages or just an idea that’s being considered. If it does arrive, though, it should help strengthen the brand’s lineup and position it to take advantage of the demand for full-size crossovers.
