The next-gen 2020 Toyota Highlander is making its southeast debut at the Miami International Auto Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center, following its global reveal at the New York International Auto Show.

Two engine choices

For the new model year, the Highlander rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture, a modular platform that Toyota says “enables even greater capability, comfort and safety than before.” It is powered by either a V6 engine or a new-generation hybrid powertrain, offering an estimated 22 mpg in the former case or up to 34 mpg in the latter case.

The hybrid model pairs a high-efficiency, 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, though even without the motors the powertrain would be impressively advanced. It uses Toyota’s intelligent variable valve timing system on the exhaust camshaft, a variable cooling system comprised of an electric water pump and electric thermostat, and a fully variable oil pump, all designed to improve efficiency.

2020 Highlander features

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered at five trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum. It features an 8-inch touch-screen display that’s expanded to 12.3 inches on the top trim, and comes with an available 1,200-watt premium sound system by JBL.

The three-row SUV is being presented alongside the 2020 GR Supra and 2020 Corolla on Toyota’s show floor in Miami, along with various other vehicles from the brand. You can expect to see the 2020 Highlander at dealerships before the end of the year, with the Highlander Hybrid to follow in the first quarter of 2020.
