OnStar’s Command Center Stops Vehicle Theft
Located on the twelfth floor of General Motors World Headquarters in Detroit, the OnStar Command Center houses a support staff that is working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They can do anything from providing directions and roadside assistance, to running vehicle diagnostic reports and even preventing vehicle theft.
Probably OnStar’s most impressive feature is the Stolen Vehicle Slowdown, which is one of three Stolen Vehicle Assistance tools OnStar offers. OnStar is able to locate a stolen vehicle through GPS and can then enact a Remote Ignition Block that makes it impossible to start the stolen vehicle.
If the vehicle is already in motion, OnStar can gradually and safely slow down the vehicle until it comes to a complete stop. OnStar has stopped car theft in the act nearly 250 times in the last five years.
“Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is a prime example of a safety service that our customers rely on us to provide,” said George Baker, emergency services outreach manager for OnStar, in a press release. “We have a strong relationship with law enforcement that has allowed us to refine our processes, promote teamwork and more quickly recover stolen vehicles for our subscribers.”
