First Mazda delivers a stunning unveiling of the new MX-5 Miata in an exclusive Duran Duran concert last night. Now, Mazda has released a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata gallery featuring the best images of the fourth generation roadster. And, all we at The News Wheel can say is… boy does it look a LOT better than it did with a blue blanket over it!

“There was a strong feeling that the car needed to be modernized,” director of design Derek Jenkins said as he unveiled the new MX-5 Miata, reminding us that there’s a reason the iconic vehicle holds the world record as the best-selling two-seater.

While the technical specifications of the new model have yet to be disclosed, numerous observations can be made about the changes in design. Following the brand’s KODO-Soul of Motion philosophy, the front end nearly touches the ground, while the fenders are pulled back further from the hood.

To meet European standards, the new model dropped the front end and lowered the belt-line dip make the driver stick out behind the blacked-out A-pillar and raked windshield. Also noticeable, all exterior lamps are LEDs, including the daytime running lamp pipes. Just look at those LED cateyes on the roadster: that’s one fine grin across the Miata’s face.

The new ND Miata is also 200 pounds lighter than the previous-generation NC model it replaces through the use of SKYACTIV technology. The change comes from the aluminum hood, trunk lid, and bumpers assemblies. And, in probably the only way it’s good to shrink 3 inches, the newest roadster actually drops in length to assert a new standard in its compact segment.

This isn’t just a sports car; it’s a sports car to be seen in along coastal highways punctuated by sunlight-drenched curves and stretches. “The design of the new Mazda MX-5 must look gorgeous in a scene with the setting sun,” agrees product engineering/planner Shinichi Yasui. Could you even picture this car in a different shade than the Soul Red color it’s been marketed in?

This certainly won’t be the last innovation made by Mazda, as the design innovations made on the 2016 MX-5 Miata are merely the first steps in a new chapter in the roadster’s legacy.  Prepare for its global release in dealerships beginning in 2015.
