Volkswagen ended last month with is best April sales month in six years.

In the first four months of 2019, VW has sold 117,181 vehicles — a number that is up 3.9 percent from 2018.

SUVs take the cake

SUV purchases made up 53 percent of VW sales in April and amount to over half of the car company’s sold cars year-to-date.

This is quite a flip-flop from two years ago, when SUVs accounted for 14 percent of VW sales. The growing popularity for the car type among younger buyers and families has likely had an impact on this.

“We’ve outperformed the market by doing a better job of meeting consumer demand for SUVs. Atlas and Tiguan sales were both up in April, with Tiguan reaching its second best month on record,” said Derrik Hatami, EVP sales and marketing after sales, Volkswagen of America. “Growth with our SUV lineup along with our new Jetta is moving the VW brand forward.”

Top three performers

Leading the way for automaker were the Tiguan, Jetta, and Atlas; as all three models saw increases month over month and year-to-date.

The VW Tiguan took the first spot with 10,539 units sold in April, a 38 percent increase from 2018. To date, VW has pushed 37,072 models off dealer lots, a 25 percent increase from last year at this time.
