7 Most Sensational Cars from the 2017 Detroit Auto Show
Every year, car enthusiasts from around the country flock to Detroit for the annual North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). This is where top automakers bring their newest models, most innovative concept cars, and latest advancements in automotive technology. Last year’s show was highlighted by vehicles like the Buick Avista Concept and the 2017 Lincoln Continental, but this year’s event featured a different type of atmosphere. Brands such as Porsche and Tesla skipped the 2017 Detroit Auto Show all together, leaving the door open for mainstream brands like Subaru and Toyota to steal the spotlight. Below are seven of the must-see cars from NAIAS 2017….
- Kia Stinger
- Challenger GT
- Ford GT
- Chrysler Portal Concept
- Subaru WRX STI
- Nissan Vmotion 2.0 Concept
- Toyota Camry
2018 Kia Stinger
The star of Kia’s display was definitely the 2018 Kia Stinger. This model is available with a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 that provides 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. There’s no confirmed release date yet for the Stinger, but it is expected to reach Kia showrooms later this year. The 2018 Stinger is also available with all-wheel drive, as well as a Harman/Kardon audio system with 15 speakers. However, Kia has yet to releasing pricing details for its new four-door fastback.
2017 Dodge Challenger GT
The first two-door muscle coupe to ever come with all-wheel drive also made an appearance at NAIAS. Dodge made the surprising decision to showcase its newest model on a rotating display where people could not sit in or even touch the muscle car. The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT will carry a starting MSRP of $33,395 and is expected to reach FCA dealerships in the first quarter of this year. The only thing that some people might not like about the all-wheel drive Challenger is that it’s only offered with a V6 motor rated at 305 horsepower.
2017 Ford GT
Okay, so the Ford GT isn’t exactly new, as it made its debut two years ago at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, but few cars at this year’s event attracted as much attention as the Ford GT supercar. In addition, the automaker also brought the Ford GT racecar that won its division in the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. People crowded around this limited-production model, feverishly snapping pictures with their cell phones, just to prove they were in the presence of this performance machine.
Chrysler Portal Concept
Designed by Millennials for Millennials, the Chrysler Portal Concept could be a preview of future Chrysler designs. Its doors are unique, as they open from the center and then slide apart to reveal a high-tech interior that offers seating for six. This van also comes with docking stations for up to 10 mobiles devices. What’s more, the Portal Concept is capable of level 3 semi autonomous driving, which means it can drive itself on the highway under specific circumstances. Lastly, it should be noted that this all-electric minivan can travel up to 250 miles with just a single charge.
2018 Subaru WRX STI
The Subaru WRX might not be as popular as the Ford Mustang, but this model is a favorite of diehard Subaru enthusiasts who are familiar with its zesty flat-4 engine and road-gripping all-wheel-drive system. The 2018 WRX STI comes with a host of updates, including new 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, a larger instrument panel, high-performance Brembo brakes, and new roof rack mounting brackets. Subaru is expected to completely redesign the WRX for the 2020 model year, giving it the same platform that debuted in the new Impreza, but until then enthusiasts will have to make do with this updated version.
Nissan Vmotion 2.0 Concept
There weren’t many concept cars revealed at this year’s NAIAS, but the one that really stood out was the Nissan Vmotion 2.0 Concept. This futuristic car is meant to showcase Nissan’s future design language and also attest to the company’s commitment in developing autonomous technology. The outside of the car features a massive v-shaped grille and its suicide doors are also a design highlight. Taking a step inside, you’ll find a display screen, which is used to control the car’s ProPilot technology. This autonomous driving system will allow the concept car to pilot itself on the highway.
2018 Toyota Camry
While the Toyota Camry has a strong reputation for reliability, some critics say the car is boring and lacks personality. It seems like Toyota took that criticism into account when designing the 2018 Camry because the new model has a more aggressive design than previous offerings. Some of the most notable updates include a new wing-shaped grille, a sculpted hood, and a lower roofline. The interior also comes with more soft touch materials and the gauges have a sportier appearance as well. Overall, the design of the new Camry isn’t as bold as FT-1 Concept, but it’s still more eye-catching than the current model, which happens to be the best-selling car in the United States.
Samuel Huist is easily the tallest member (6-feet 5-inches) of the The News Wheel team. He enjoys listening to hip-hop music and loves watching NBA basketball. Sam is also a Dayton, Ohio native and doesn’t seem to mind that distinction as much anymore. His first car was a 1996 Ford Taurus he could barely fit in. Like many young folks, he seemed more concerned about the radio in his first car than actually doing the work to maintain an automobile, so sadly it’s no longer with us. See more articles by Samuel.
