Ford has revealed that the upcoming 2021 Ford Explorer will reintroduce the popular XLT Sport Appearance Package, bringing back an option that pairs prettay, prettay well with the bold styling of the latest-gen model.

The 2021 Ford Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Package adds Carbonized Grey grille, skid plates, Explorer hood badging, dual chrome exhaust tips, and 20-inch wheels on the outside and ActiveX Light Slate two-tone seats with accent stitching on the inside, helping it stand out from the Explorer lineup just that little bit extra. You can expect the XLT Sport Appearance Package to be pretty popular if history is any indication: According to Ford, 25 percent of all Explorer XLTs sold had the Sport Appearance Package when it was available, and it was particularly popular with young’ns.

“Our Sport Appearance Package offers a new styling dimension for Explorer XLT customers,” said Craig Patterson, Ford SUV marketing manager. “It has always been a favorite among our younger customers looking for a more energetic design and feel at a great value.”

Ford also revealed this month that the 30th anniversary of the SUV’s launch kicked off in proper fashion when the 8-millionth Explorer sold in January. Moving 8 million examples since 1990 gives the Explorer a milestone no other SUV can match, and the fact that new Explorer buyers tend to skew younger — 18 percent of all 2020 Ford Explorers are being bought by folks from the coveted 18-35 demo — means that 10 million probably won’t be all that far off.

Guiding the way is the first-ever Ford Explorer ST, which Ford says has thus far accounted for 21 percent of all 2020 Explorer sales and has a 28 percent conquest rate from luxury brands.

“Ford ST stands for performance for enthusiasts, and Explorer ST is no exception,” Patterson added. “We believe once drivers feel the power and refinement of our first-ever Explorer ST, performance bred from racetracks around the world, demand will only grow stronger.”
