120 students took part in Ford Careers Day in South Africa

One hundred and twenty students from South Africa descended upon the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria and Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth last month to take part in Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa’s annual Careers Day. The event aims at giving children from grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to get up close and personal with the automotive manufacturing industry and the people who shape it.

“We believe that freedom of movement drives human progress, and we aspire to become the world’s most trusted mobility company, designing smart vehicles in a smart world,” said Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa Human Resources Director Thabo Masete. “This requires a huge number of people, with a vast array of skill sets and qualifications, to fill the various roles. And this is what we wanted to show the learners today.”
In Pretoria, 80 students took part while 40 more joined in in Port Elizabeth. The makeup of the students was diverse, providing children from different schools and of families of various means the chance to learn more about the fields that make up auto manufacturing. Among the opportunities presented to students were those in mechanical engineering, product design, supply chain management, and human resources.
Aiding the event were representatives on behalf of the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, Boston College, and the Ford Resource and Engagement Center. The volunteers provided the students with tips relating to their current and upcoming studies, taking part in career days and leveraging the experience of counsellors, and being cognizant of deadlines.
