For many states across the nation, winter means chilly temperatures. While the cold is a nuisance for many drivers, it poses a greater challenge (and potential health risk) for those who live out of their vehicles. One Bloomington church is doing its part to raise awareness about homelessness in central Illinois.

Unique event spotlights homelessness in Bloomington

This year marks the third annual Night In A Car event, a homelessness simulation that Trinity Lutheran Church hosts each year. Currently, 200-250 people in the Bloomington-Normal area live out of their cars each night, per Home Sweet Home shelter’s CEO Mary Ann Pullin. Tents and parking garages are two additional housing options for these residents.

Event participants will spend the night in a vehicle parked in the church’s parking lot, to better understand what it’s like to be homeless. Each team will be given a scenario based on a real-life scenario from a Home Sweet Home resident. Each team’s goal is to raise $1,000 per car. All proceeds from the event will benefit Home Sweet Home, to help them keep providing housing, food, clothing, and rehousing services for those in need.

Ways to participate in Night In A Car

Last year, 100 people from the church, local businesses, and the surrounding neighborhood braved 20-degree temperatures for one night. The group raised over $47,000 for Home Sweet Home. This year’s event promises another successful turnout.

If you live in or near Bloomington, consider taking part in this year’s event set for Feb. 1. For more information about registering, click here. Even if you don’t live in the area, though, you can still play a role in this cool event. If you’re interested in sponsoring one of the participating teams, visit the Night In A Car website here.
