General Motors will be teaming up with Raytheon and the U.S. Army for the Shifting Gears program, the aim of which is to provide transitioning American soldiers with job opportunities, specifically as service technicians at General Motors dealerships nationwide.

The Shifting Gears program (officially given the incredibly lengthy title of the Shifting Gears Automotive Technician Training Program) marks a partnership meant to last several years to benefit our nation’s heroes. Officially, the partnership will begin next month at Ford Hood, located in Killeen, Texas.
“Shifting Gears illustrates GM’s commitment to serving those who serve America,” said Steve Hill, GM vice president, U.S. Sales and Service. “GM has supported the U.S. military for 100 years. From providing purpose-built vehicles in conflict situations to today’s support for veterans and returning military personnel, we continue to be their strong allies.”
The Shifting Gears program is a part of the Soldier for Life program in the Army, which serves to integrate returning soldiers back into their communities and daily lives. The program entails a 12-week series of courses (a mixture of classroom, online, and hands-on learning) and a subsequent graduation, followed by career counseling, job-placement recommendations, and even employment assistance. And, of course, these soldiers will have access to opportunities with GM’s dealer network.
