2018 was a busy year for GM. The company invested $1 billion more in Cruise Automation to further advance its autonomous and vehicle technologies. It announced that its Arlington assembly plant will switch to wind power in the next few years. 2019 promises to be an equally-ambitious one for the automaker. According to GM Authority, GM is working on a new compact unibody pickup truck. It will likely market the product under the Chevrolet moniker.
Details about the new model
The unibody pickup will replace the Chevrolet Montana, currently available in the Latin American market. GM will base this model on the GEM platform. Other future models that will share this platform include the Chevrolet Sail, Tracker, and Onix, as well as the Buick Excelle. The unibody pickup will be part of the automaker’s strategy to cultivate a new series of affordable vehicles intended for developing markets.

Per GM Authority, the future Chevy unibody pickup will be a larger and improved version of the Montana model. So, it should be able to transport more than just two people, which is the current capacity of the Montana. The unibody model will likely have a four-door body and incorporate an extended version of the next-gen Chevy Tracker’s chassis.
Poised for a Brazilian market
While some GEM platform models are a collaboration between Brazilian and Chinese teams, the Chevy Montana will be developed solely by GM Brazil. We anticipate more news in the days ahead as GM shares more details about this exciting new addition to the GEM platform vehicle series.
