GM Brazil Conserves Water, Sets Example for Sustainable Production Methods | The News Wheel

GM is just one of the mainstream automakers that are seeking more earth-conscious ways to operate production facilities. We’ve already mentioned the company’s zero-emission vision for both its products and procedures. Now, we’d like to give a head-nod to the sustainable processes its Brazilian plants have implemented.

Recent conservation achievements

From 2003 to 2018, manufacturing plants in Brazil reduced the water consumed per vehicle produced by 76 percent. And this past year alone, the company reused 32 million gallons of water. That’s enough to fill 50 Olympic swimming pools with water, as GM Authority confirms.

GM’s Energy and Utilities manager for South America, Glaucia Roveri, expressed pride at the Brazil facilities’ environmental accomplishments. “Our teams are continually focusing on reducing consumption or increasing water reuse. The issue is not only the preservation of a natural resource but also the conservation of something that is essential for consumption [by] communities.”

A legacy of sustainability

GM Brazil’s latest achievements to benefit the environment are just a continuation of its long-term commitment to minimize the consumption of natural resources. Back in the 1940s, GM laid a foundation for water conservation by implementing a “biodigestor” sewage treatment system. Then in the 1970s, GM Brazil São José dos Campos complex implemented the country’s largest wastewater treatment plant at that time. São Caetano do Sul plant followed suit by incorporating a new, more eco-friendly treatment system of its own during the 1980s.

We commend GM Brazil for its legacy of introducing and cultivating sustainable production methods to help preserve the country’s precious resources.
