Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a gearhead who just wants to push the limits, daunting roads can be an exhilarating and gratifying experience. Here are four nerve-racking routes around the world to add to your driving-related bucket list.
Smart Buyer: Benefits of going with an older vehicle
Transfagarasan
When in Romania, try your luck on one of the country’s most challenging routes, Transfagarasan. Known as “the road to the sky,” this 71-mile path ranges from 1,630-6,700 feet in elevation. Frequent hairpin turns provide another level of intimidation, so this drive isn’t for the faint of heart. For favorable driving conditions, plan your trip between June and October and check for any road closures beforehand.
Ruta 40
The longest road in Argentina and one of the longest roads in the world, Ruta 40 spans more than 3,100 miles from La Quiaca, Jujuy to Cabo Virgenes in Santa Cruze. The route features 236 major bridges and a plethora of mountain passes including Abra del Acay, which boasts an elevation of 16,060 feet. If you’re game to tackle this treacherous road, you’ll be rewarded with scenes of rugged Patagonia, as well as 20 national parks you can take a detour along the route. September to November or April to May is the best time to experience Ruta 40.
For a South American thrill, Bolivia’s North Yungas Road should suit. It drops nearly 12,000 feet as it meanders through the moutainous landscape from La Paz to Coroico. Narrow paths without guard rails and cliffside views are sure to make your palms sweat. Plan your trip from April to November for the safest driving conditions.
Trollstigen translates to “Troll Ladder” in Norwegian. It’s an apt name for this intimidating road that features 11 hairpin turns and climbs a 10 percent incline at its steepest parts. A variety of waterfalls like Stigfossen make pleasant pit stops along the way if you need a break from white-knuckling the steering wheel. Drive this route May to June through October to November, for the best weather conditions.
