The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

General Motors’ efficient, powerful new 6.2-liter V8 engine has been named to the 2019 WardsAuto 10 Best Engines list.

This engine can be found on the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It uses Dynamic Fuel Management technology to optimize performance. Equipped with this technology, the engine can use a smaller number of its cylinders much of the time.

“DFM determines 80 times per second exactly how many cylinders require fuel to meet power demands,” said WardsAuto Senior Content Director Drew Winter. “And, incredibly, it uses as few as two cylinders to propel the full-size pickup down the highway. The truly amazing part is the cylinder deactivation is imperceptible, so seamless that the only thing the driver notices is fewer stops at the pump.”

Decisions, Decisions: What kind of vehicle is right for you?

GM’s 6.2-liter V8 with DFM

This 6.2-liter engine makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. For even more efficient operation, it’s paired with a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission.

The new Silverado also offers a 5.3-liter V8 engine equipped with DFM. This engine is rated at 355 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque.

These engines’ DFM technology was derived from an earlier system called Active Fuel Management, or AFM. Engines equipped with AFM could switch between four-cylinder and eight-cylinder operation. In comparison, DFM switches among 17 different cylinder patterns, activating and deactivating multiple cylinders as necessary to balance fuel usage and power delivery.

Each year, WardsAuto evaluates all new and upgraded engines available on production vehicles in the U.S. Each engine is rated on technology, fuel economy, noise, horsepower, torque, and other criteria.
