Electric BMW vehicles like the i8 are on the rise

With each passing day, drivers are hearing more about the rise in popularity for larger trucks and SUVs. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that green vehicles aren’t gaining ground, especially when they are a part of the BMW fleet.

In fact, BMW delivered more than 10,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in January and February.

Compared to January and February of last year, that is an 110.1% increase in sales. BMW more than doubled the amount of green vehicles it sold compared to this period the year before.

The increased sales figures play a big role in BMW’s electric and hybrid vehicle goals for 2017. Last December, BMW CEO Harald Krueger stated that the company hopes to sell 100,000 electric cars and hybrid plug-ins by the end of this year.

BMW has relied upon the i3 and i8 vehicles for strong electric sales so far

With such a lofty goal set in place, BMW would have to sell green vehicles at an even more rapid rate than dealers are already selling them at. Fortunately, BMW has introduced several vehicles that should help out with that.

In the past, BMW’s electric fleet was composed of the BMW i3 and BMW i8. In BMW’s mission to increase electric vehicle sales, the brand has introduced plug-in hybrid models for the 3 Series sedan, 7 Series sedan, and X5 SUV.

The BMW 530e set to be released later this month should help boost sales for BMW

Later this month, BMW will release the 2017 BMW 530e iPerformance hybrid. Meanwhile, production is already underway for all-electric models of the BMW X3 and MINI Cooper.

However, the most important component for BMW’s electric success is predicted to come in the form of the i5 Crossover. Set to enter production in 2018 or 2019, the BMW i5 will bridge the market gap between the BMW i3 and the more expensive BMW i8.

BMW will need all the support it can get form its fleet if it wants to meet its goal of having between 15 and 25% of its global sales come directly from electric and hybrid vehicles. Nevertheless, the sales figures from the last two months are a good first step.
