First previewed in Europe and later shown as a concept in Milan in 2024, the EV3 now appears largely unchanged in its production form. Its debut at the 2026 New York International Auto Show marks a key step for Kia as it targets broader accessibility in the electric vehicle market.

The EV3 arrives at a time when compact EV offerings remain limited, especially in the U.S. Kia had previously indicated ambitions to expand its electric portfolio beyond higher-priced models like the EV6 and EV9, and the EV3 reflects that strategy. The model is expected to compete directly in a segment currently dominated by vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and the outgoing Chevrolet Bolt EV.

EV9-Inspired Design Carried Into a Smaller Format

The EV3 adopts a design language closely derived from the larger EV9, translating its geometric styling and upright proportions into a smaller footprint. According to MotorTrend, the vehicle sits between subcompact and compact SUV dimensions, with a size comparable to the Ford Bronco Sport.

Kia’s global design head Karim Habib described the EV3 as a crossover with a more geometric approach, featuring upright lines intended to enhance visual presence. The model includes a long wheelbase and short overhangs, giving it a stance that appears larger than its actual size.

Aerodynamic considerations are also central to the design. The EV3 integrates a full underbody cover, an active air flap, and aerodynamic wheels, resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.275 Cd. Wheel options include 17- and 19-inch alloys, while higher trims such as GT-Line and GT add distinct styling elements, including neon green accents and unique wheels. A Nightfall package introduces a blacked-out appearance on select versions.

Interior Space and Technology Mirror Higher-End Models

Inside, the EV3 emphasizes space and flexibility, with a flat floor layout and an open cabin design. Despite a slightly raised passenger floor to accommodate battery packaging, the vehicle maintains generous headroom and a sense of openness.

The dashboard features a panoramic display with dual 12.3-inch screens, similar to the EV9, along with physical controls for climate and audio functions. The system runs on Kia’s ccNC operating platform and includes an AI voice assistant.

Trim differences extend into the cabin. GT-Line models offer two-tone seating and metal pedals, while GT versions add sport-oriented seats and neon green interior highlights. Standard features include dual-zone climate control, with optional heated and ventilated seats. Rear passengers benefit from reclining seatbacks and dedicated air vents.

Storage solutions include a small front trunk and a configurable rear cargo area with a two-step floor, allowing for either increased capacity or concealed storage.

Two Battery Options and Competitive Range Targets

The EV3 is built on Hyundai Motor Group’s 400-volt E-GMP platform and offers two battery configurations. The entry-level version uses a 58.3-kWh battery with front-wheel drive, delivering an estimated range of 220 miles.

Higher trims are equipped with an 81.4-kWh battery, enabling up to 320 miles of range in front-wheel-drive configurations. All-wheel drive is available on select trims, including the GT-Line and GT. The GT variant is expected to produce 288 horsepower, compared to 261 horsepower in other AWD versions.

Charging performance is also specified, with DC fast charging from 10 to 80 percent taking 29 minutes for the smaller battery and 31 minutes for the larger one. The EV3 introduces Kia’s i-Pedal 3.0 system, which allows drivers to adjust regenerative braking levels and retain settings between drives. Additional functionality includes Vehicle-to-Load capability, enabling the car to power external devices such as small appliances when parked.

Kia has not yet confirmed pricing, though earlier indications suggested a range between $35,000 and $50,000. The EV3 is expected to become Kia’s primary small electric SUV following the discontinuation of the Niro EV, as the brand aims to address a gap in the market for more accessible electric vehicles.
