This is the first time in Android Auto’s 11-year history that the interface can occupy the entire available screen space across different vehicle layouts. Google demonstrated the feature on displays from Mini, Lucid, and BMW vehicles during its presentation.

Google’s update focuses on improving how Android Auto fits modern infotainment systems, many of which now use unconventional screen designs. In the demonstrations shown by the company, Google Maps stretched edge-to-edge on each display while interface buttons remained grouped inside a borderless floating rectangle.

The redesign also adds persistent widgets layered directly over navigation. Drivers can pin shortcuts for music controls, garage door openers, or calendars without leaving the active map screen. Depending on the size of the display, the interface can support one or two rows of widgets alongside navigation guidance.

Google Maps Receives a Redesigned Immersive Navigation View

At the center of the update is Google Maps’ new Immersive Navigation experience. According to Google, the redesigned system introduces a 3D visualization that displays buildings, terrain, and overpasses directly within the navigation interface.

The updated maps also highlight real-time road information including traffic lights, stop signs, and lane guidance. Google presented the feature as part of a broader effort to make navigation clearer while preserving access to other in-car functions.

The interface was specifically optimized for displays with unusual dimensions and shapes, an increasingly common trend among automakers introducing larger infotainment systems.

Android Auto Adds HD Video Playback and Dolby Atmos Audio

Google confirmed that Android Auto will support 60 frames-per-second full HD video playback later this year in compatible vehicles. The feature will initially arrive in supported models from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata, and Volvo.

Videos streamed from services such as YouTube will only appear while the vehicle is parked. According to Google, playback will not stop completely once the vehicle starts moving. The video image will disappear, while audio can continue in the background if the application supports it.

The company also announced upcoming Dolby Atmos support for Android Auto. Spatial audio compatibility will launch in supported apps and vehicles from BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Skoda, Tata, and Volvo.

Gemini AI Gains Deeper Integration Inside the Car

Google is also expanding Gemini’s role within Android Auto. Later this year, Android users with access to Gemini Intelligence will be able to use contextual AI features designed to simplify tasks while driving.

According to Google, Gemini can understand the context of incoming messages and anticipate actions based on information stored across texts, emails, or calendars. During its presentation, the company described a scenario where Gemini’s “Magic Cue” feature could automatically locate an address requested by a friend and suggest a reply containing the correct information.

Google also demonstrated voice commands allowing users to ask Gemini to place their usual DoorDash order for pickup.

The new Android Auto features were presented as part of Google’s broader update to the in-car experience, combining redesigned navigation, expanded media functions, and AI-assisted interactions across supported vehicles.
