As a previous winner at other auto shows, the XC60 has achieved the North American Truck of the Year and World Car of the Year. This time involved the popular SUV utilizing recycled plastics within it framework during its production.
Volvo Cars’ Research and Development department replaced many of its plastic materials with recycled elements. The tradeoff paid off, as the Volvo XC60 still exhibited the same level of comfort, design and quality as previously.
That’s Not All: The XC60 is a safer drive, too
This is a wonderful moment for the project and for Volvo Cars as a whole,” said Gunilla Karlsson, one of our senior engineers who received the award in Amsterdam on behalf of Volvo Cars. “With this car, we demonstrated the viability of our recycled plastics ambition. To be recognised for our work with this award is very motivating.”
Volvo is leading the way in using recycled products for its vehicle lineup. By 2025, the automaker is planning to launch at least 25 percent of its new cars with recycled plastics. In the process, it hopes to get more suppliers on board to help them positively impact the environment.
Other endeavors for Volvo include removing single-use plastics, establishing a climate-neutral manufacturing network and going all-electric.
