It’s alive! By it, we of course mean the partnership between Ford Motor Company, Universal Pictures, and holoride, which has led to the creation of a unique new in-car VR experience. Between Oct. 14 and Nov. 9, Universal Monsters Presents Bride of Frankenstein holoride-equipped 2020 Ford Explorers can be picked up at the Universal CityWalk in California. Inside, guests will experience unique virtual reality content featuring the Bride of Frankenstein.

“We are partnering with Ford and Universal to bring holoride’s immersive, elastic content to the general public,” said Nils Wollny, CEO and co-founder of holoride. “Riders will be able to experience first-hand what the future of in-vehicle entertainment looks like through the lens of the compelling story of the Bride of Frankenstein.”

According to Ford, the story involves a “re-imagined” Bride of Frankenstein attempting to deliver a message to Frankenstein. It’s not clear, however, if Ford committed the classic blunder and is instead referring to Frankenstein’s monster. Because, you see, Frankenstein was the doctor, not the creation. But then this begs the question: If the Bride of Frankenstein was the creation intended for the monster, why is she not known as the Bride of Frankenstein’s Monster? It’s all unraveling.

The experience will have the holoriders, wearing VR headsets, encountering virtual monsters and obstacles along the journey. The vehicle will be in motion, and holoride will leverage data like steering and acceleration to match the virtual experience to the actual ride.

This real-world application of in-vehicle virtual reality entertainment is part of what Universal Pictures Technology Partnerships VP Greg Reed calls the emergence of “everyday travel” as a platform for content.
