General Motors’ third-quarter sales report contained some happy news for Chevrolet: the brand’s sales were up 4.6 percent over the same period last year.

In July, August, and September, Chevy racked up 507,273 sales, compared to 485,019 during those months in 2018. For the year, though, Chevy’s numbers haven’t quite caught up. So far, the brand has sold 1,459,251, lagging behind last year’s numbers by 3 percent.

Chevy’s biggest gains for the quarter came thanks to its trucks and crossovers, with larger SUVs and cars struggling to keep pace. Here’s how Chevy’s individual models fared:

Two Truck Standouts: Meet the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500HD

Truck power

Chevy’s perennial bestseller, the Silverado 1500, led the way again in the third quarter. The model sold 119,641 units, an 18 percent increase. The Silverado HD had a strong showing, too, selling 34,212 units for 7.1 percent growth. The midsize Colorado didn’t fare quite so well, dropping 9.5 percent with 31,657 sold.

Crossovers excel

Small and midsize crossovers dominated Chevy’s third-quarter sales. The Equinox was second only to the Silverado with 79,799 sales, although those numbers represented only a 2.3 percent gain. The subcompact Trax moved 37,407 units for a stunning 82 percent increase. The Traverse sold 41,116 models and was up 24.9 percent. The new Blazer sold 20,312 units in its second full quarter on the market. Chevy’s two full-size SUVs, the Tahoe and the Suburban, both lost ground for the quarter — perhaps due to the fact that both are in line for complete overhauls in 2021.

Bright spots for car sales

Despite an ongoing slump in car sales, a couple of Chevrolet models posted gains for the quarter. The Bolt EV was up 22.3 percent, selling 4,830 units. The Malibu sedan made modest gains: 32,432 sales and a 4.5 percent increase. Corvette numbers were up 2.7 percent with 4,766 sales.
