An electric version of the Sierra is much more likely than you might think
Late last week, Ford confirmed that an all-electric version of the F-150 is currently in development. Of course, Ford isn’t the only automaker interested in all-electric tech for its trucks.
GM recently expressed interest in developing similar models for its GMC brand.

CNBC had the opportunity to speak with Duncan Aldred, the head of the GMC and Buick brands. When the subject of all-electric pickup trucks came up, Aldred showed some interest in the vehicles.
“Certainly, it’s something we’re considering,” he responded.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a high-ranking member of GM discussed the possibility of electric trucks. During an investor meeting earlier this month, GM CEO Mary Barra implied that the automaker may look into the potential of electric trucks.
Most of the electric vehicles in GM’s portfolio currently belong to the Chevrolet family of models. However, new reports suggest Buick and Cadillac will distribute most of GM’s upcoming EVs.
If GM were to introduce electric trucks to its lineup, the GMC Sierra might just be a better candidate than the Chevrolet Silverado. Due to its higher asking price, the Sierra would better absorb the costs associated with EVs and the batteries that power them.
The Sierra may not be the only GM truck to receive an electrified variant
Still, there’s nothing to say that GM won’t also introduce an electric-powered Silverado. Pickup trucks have a naturally higher profit margin than most vehicles, meaning GM is more likely to turn a profit selling an electric truck than an electric sedan.
GM has already committed to a future built upon increased electrification. Though the prospect may seem a bit odd at first, electric trucks are a natural progression of this new business plan.
