Ford Motor Company released its 20th Sustainability Report this month, part a reflection on how far the automaker has come since its first report in 1999, part a recap on what its efforts were in 2018, and part a look ahead to its plans for further sustainability in the years to come.

“We are committed to having a positive impact on the planet and the communities where we live and operate,” said Kim Pittel, vice president, sustainability, environment, and safety engineering. “By working with our partners and suppliers to find solutions that protect the planet and make people’s lives better, we can make an even bigger impact and reach our goals together.”

Among the 2018 achievements listed in the report was Ford’s United Nationals rights saliency assessment, its 10th year of leveraging soybean-based foam in its vehicles, and its meeting the 2010 goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent a full eight years ahead of schedule. Ford in 2018 also announced a goal of using no potable water in its manufacturing processes.

The 20th Sustainability Report also establishes several key new objectives for Ford in the years ahead. Ford pledges to move all manufacturing plants to renewable energy like hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar by 2035 — Ford had already announced in February that it will move Dearborn Truck and Michigan Assembly to renewable energy as a precursor to the announcement of its Global Carbon Reduction Strategy.

Ford will also bypass the inanity of the executive and abide by the Paris Climate Accord, and it details its efforts in this respect in an adjoining Climate Change Scenario Report. Ford also reports that it plans to eliminate the use of single-use plastics in all operations by 2030.
