C-V2X Technology

In a post published on Medium, Ford Connected Vehicle Platform and Product Executive Director Don Butler announced that the automaker intends to deploy cellular vehicle-to-everything technology in all new vehicles sold in the United States by 2022. C-V2X technology, growing in conjunction with 5G cellular network development, would allow vehicles to send and receive information to other vehicles and infrastructure more quickly.

Ford would use C-V2X technology with its new Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of technologies and other driver-assist features, allowing vehicles to receive information about hazards and conditions and prepare a response accordingly. C-V2X would no doubt prove vital for the development of Ford’s Intersection Priority Management technology, which seeks to provide vehicles with information to reduce the amount of time spent at red lights.

The technology would also help with self-driving vehicles, which Ford expects to launch at commercial and fleet scale by 2021.

“With plans to roll out 5G cellular networks underway, C-V2X can complement the sensors of self-driving cars. While these vehicles will be fully capable of operating without C-V2X, the technology could add to its comprehensive view from the LiDAR, radar, and camera sensors,” writes Butler. “For instance, if emergency vehicles were equipped with C-V2X transmitters, they could notify self-driving vehicles that may be on their route so the vehicles pull over or reroute in plenty of time. Self-driving vehicles could even get real-time updates on road conditions that affect their routes.”

Ford is working with auto and government organizations to ensure that the technology will be properly regulated and deployed, and it’s inviting other automakers and agencies to collaborate in the effort of getting C-V2X onto the road by 2022. Ford recently collaborated with Datang to conduct a C-V2X trial at the National Intelligent Vehicle Pilot Zone in Shanghai.

Ford is in the midst of following through with its plan to equip all U.S. vehicles with cellular connectivity by the conclusion of this year.
