Ford Motor Company continues its push to be one of the world’s most environmentally responsible corporations with the announcement that its Dearborn Truck Plant, Michigan Assembly Plant, and several buildings in the Ford Research and Engineering Campus and upcoming Corktown campus will be powered using 100 percent renewable energy.

“Ford supports the implementation of renewable energy where the project can be tied to the customer’s facility, either directly or through the local distribution utility, and we believe that supports local jobs, improves the local environment, and adds resiliency to the local grid,” said George Andraos, Ford Global Director of Energy and Technology. “This project is a great investment for the State of Michigan and will have direct impact on our state.”

With the announcement, Ford becomes the first company to take advantage of DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program, which offers tariffs for large corporations and industries to encourage the switch to renewable energy. Ford will supplement its 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel system at Michigan Assembly with 500,000 megawatt hours of wind energy sourced from Michigan-based wind farms. Dearborn Truck Plant is responsible for production of the Ford F-150 and F-150 Raptor, and Michigan Assembly is home of the new Ranger and upcoming Bronco.

DTE received approval for the tariffs from the Michigan Public Service Commission in January, and it is pledging to more than double its capacity for generating renewable energy by 2024 with a $2 billion wind and solar investment. This directly supports its longer-term goal of cutting carbon emissions by more than 80 percent by 2050.

Ford earlier this year was given an A score for water security and an A- for climate change action on the 2018 CDP A List. The automaker plans to reveal its new Global Carbon Reduction Strategy in June in coordination with the release of its 20th Sustainability Report.
