Ford Motor Company is extending testing for its new Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid to the city of Cologne, Germany, furthering its efforts to demonstrate the viability of zero-emissions driving in real-world cases.

Ford Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid trial testing now spans Cologne, London, and Valencia, Spain. Ford is also leveraging the trials to determine what roles geofencing and blockchain technology can play in increasing the efficiency of plug-in hybrid vehicles like the Transit Custom PHEV and the Tourneo Custom PHEV.

“Ford is committed to delivering new, more environmentally sustainable vehicles that can help address the mobility challenges our cities face,” said Mark Harvey, director, Commercial Vehicle Mobility, Ford of Europe. “The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle trials with our partners in the City of Cologne build upon our ongoing electrification programs elsewhere in Europe and bring us all closer to meeting our combined urban air quality goals.”

The Cologne trial period will cover 12 months and involve 10 plug-in hybrid vehicles. Over the course of the period, Ford will test a tamper-proof tracking and logging technology that will make it easier for fleet operators to keep tabs on how their vehicles are performing. The extension of the trial to Cologne also makes Ford an official partner of SmartCity Cologne, an initiative aimed at climate protection programs and endeavors.

Ford expects to launch the new Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid by the spring of next year along with its geofencing module, which will enable the van to automatically switch to zero-emissions driving when entering low-emission zones that will be introduced across Europe in the years ahead.

“Cologne will keep its drive in the future. And it will be emission-free,” said Henriette Reker, Lord Mayor of the City of Cologne. “Our goal is to achieve the best possible solution for climate-friendly mobility in all areas.”
