GM Files for the “Montana” Vehicle Name Trademark for its Chevy Pickup Lineup

Is the Chevy Montana compact pickup coming stateside?

Pickup trucks are undeniably some of the most popular vehicles throughout the entire United States automotive market. In fact, their popularity has only grown as gas prices decrease and the fuel efficiency for trucks increases.

Chevrolet is currently a leader in terms of the pickup truck segment and it looks as though the brand is working to cement its status as such. Most recently, Chevy filed a trademark for the “Montana” vehicle name.

According to the application filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Chevrolet has indicated that the name will be used for “motor vehicles, namely trucks.” Still, this isn’t the only evidence that the “Chevrolet Montana” will be a pickup model.

Chevrolet already has a Montana model in countries outside the US. The Chevy Montana, a compact pickup truck model, is sold Brazil, South Africa, and Mexico. In Mexico, the model was renamed the Chevrolet Tornado, so as not to confuse it with the Pontiac Montana minivan.

The new Montana could also be a special edition of the Silverado

Adding a compact pickup to its lineup would expand Chevy’s already extensive collection of pickup truck models. Chevrolet currently sells the mid-size Colorado and the full-size Silverado.

Furthermore, Chevy reportedly has a medium-duty GM truck on the way. While this might be the model that adopts the Montana moniker, rumors suggest that it will use the Chevrolet Kodiak name instead.

Introducing a compact truck would be a strategic move for Chevy. Compact pickups like the Honda Ridgeline are gaining popularity, providing drivers with a truck that isn’t too large for their tastes.

Of course, the Montana name might just be used for a special edition trim for one of Chevrolet’s existing trucks. Whatever the Montana title is used for, it will soon be revealed as Chevrolet pushes forward with its pickup truck plans.
