How the service works
Located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, the Okazaki Plant will receive a better energy storage system made of electric vehicles’ used batteries as well as a utility-scale rooftop photovoltaic system. The rooftop PV system project first started in October of 2019. Its commercial operation is scheduled to begin in May of 2020.
The Okazaki Plant will use the PV system’s generated power to produce electric vehicles. In other words, it will be able to build Mitsubishi vehicles by utilizing carbon-free electricity. In the fiscal year 2020, MCP and MC will also install a battery energy storage system, which is comprised of used batteries from Outlander PHEV models. They will then carry out a verification test in the same year.
Together, BESS and the PV system will reduce about 1,600 tons of carbon emissions per year, without reaching the Okazaki Plant’s peak demand for power consumption. Moving forward, Mitsubishi also intends to operate BESS as a Virtual Power Plant to help stabilize the local power supply.
If there is an emergency situation, BESS can also power the Okazaki Plant gymnasium, which acts as an evacuation shelter for Okazaki City. Mitsubishi is accordingly hoping to better the environmental, social, and economic value with its digital technology and renewable energy.
