Ford Bridgend Engine Plant new EcoBoost three-cylinder

Production got underway at the Bridgend Engine Plant in South Wales on the all-new 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine at the end of last month. The new EcoBoost will make its debut in the high-powered Ford Fiesta ST as well as the next-generation Ford Focus and was designed and developed by Ford engineers across the Essex Ford Dunton Technical Center; Ford Technical Center in Merkenich, Germany; and Ford Research and Innovation Center in Aachen, Germany.

“I’m personally very proud to see production start of this all-new engine, here in Bridgend,” said Wallace Yearwood, plant manager. “It’s the result of a significant investment in the plant, a plant which has a long-established history of delivering world-class engines, and we will make this engine another success.”

The Bridgend Engine Plant was recently the beneficiary of a $127.8 USD investment, which includes funding from the Welsh Government, that supported the creation of the new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in which the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine is built. Economy and Transport Secretary Ken Skates praised the Welsh Government’s investment in jobs for skilled laborers in South Wales in what are otherwise uncertain times.

“We are proud to have played a part in developing this world class manufacturing facility and look forward to continuing to work with the company and workforce to ensure a bright future for the plant at Bridgend, despite the upcoming challenges of Brexit,” said Skates.

The new engine requires multi-stage testing and monitoring throughout its assembly and is built using only the latest in proficient and efficient operations.
