We may not ever see the next-generation Ford Focus in the United States, but we can rest comfortably knowing that those able to drive one will enjoy a less painful experience if they have back problems.

According to Ford, its new Focus — thanks to its 18-way-adjustable driver and front passenger seats — is the first vehicle to earn an endorsement from the German group Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V., or the Campaign for Healthier Backs. The Focus’ seats were tested by AGR’s experts to determine whether they adapted to the needs of the person sitting in them rather than the other way around.

The Focus’ seats feature four-way lumbar support, four-way headrest adjustment, and additional leg support. The seats were tested with the assistance of Robutt, the unique device that simulates years of seat use to ensure maximum comfort. The seats also include height, length, and incline adjustment in addition to support for the back, neck, and thighs.

Ford cites studies stating that back pain is the leading cause of disability around the world and that around half of all Europeans can expect to experience back pain. These facts put the comfort of the new Ford Focus seats front and center, and it also informed the decision for a more spacious backseat.

“Sitting in the wrong position can make the driver slouch forward, putting pressure on the lower back. Our goal with the Focus was to build an 18-way adjustable seat that adapts to every person, enabling drivers of all shapes and sizes to easily achieve their optimal sitting position for maximum comfort, especially on long journeys,” said Glen Goold, Ford Focus chief program engineer.

When it comes to comfort, the all-new Ford Focus really has your back. Heh. Get it? Has your back? Because, like, it literally does.
