Coming to the U.S. by the end of the year, the 2019 Nexo fuel cell SUV is Hyundai’s latest addition to its cutting-edge lineup of alternatively powered vehicles. It’s also a major improvement on Hyundai’s previous fuel cell vehicle, the Tucson FCEV. Here’s a closer look at some of the Nexo’s key features.

Range and performance

Emitting only water vapor, the 2019 Hyundai Nexo is fueled by hydrogen. That fuel is converted to electricity, which powers a motor that’s capable of 161 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque. The Nexo’s driving range is about 380 miles for the Blue trim and 354 miles for the Limited trim. Its estimated fuel economy is 61 combined MPGe for the Blue and 57 MPGe combined for the Limited. Refueling only takes about five minutes.

Safety and driver-assist technology

The Nexo is equipped with an array of advanced (and autonomous) safety and driver-assist features.

  • Remote Smart Parking Assist: With this feature, the Nexo can autonomously enter or leave a parking space.
  • Lane Following Assist: This feature automatically guides steering to keep the Nexo in the middle of its lane. It’s effective at speeds of up to 90 mph and can be used on highways and city streets alike.
  • Blind-Spot View Monitor and Surround-View Monitors: These features help the driver easily change lanes, using cameras to give a wide-angle view of the Nexo’s surroundings and making all blind spots visible.
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist: These systems provide alerts and steering assistance when their sensors detect vehicles moving into the Nexo’s upcoming path.
