Safety All Around: The 2020 Telluride Gives Kia its 12th IIHS Rating for 2019
Step aside, Subaru. It was recently announced that Kia has the most vehicles with Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick Plus ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Each year, the IIHS assesses vehicles across all brands and bases its ratings on crashworthiness as well as crash avoidance and mitigation. In those two categories, a vehicle can earn a score ranging from Poor to Good (with Marginal and Acceptable in between). How a vehicle scores in those two areas determines its overall score and if it is deemed a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus.
Goodbye, Hamsters: Say “hello” to the updated 2020 Kia Soul
With the 2020 Telluride recently receiving a 2019 Top Safety Pick rating (when equipped with specific headlights), that makes 12 Kia vehicles that have received incredible ratings from the IIHS. Four 2019 vehicles — Rio sedan, Rio hatchback, Soul, and Cadenza — all received Top Safety Pick ratings. But it is seven Kia vehicles that have received the coveted Top Safety Pick Plus rating for 2019: Forte, Niro Hybrid, Niro Plug-In Hybrid, 2020 Soul, Optima, Stinger, and Sorento.
“We are extremely proud of this significant achievement,” said Orth Hedrick, Executive Director of Car Planning & Technology at Kia Motors America. “We constantly strive to build the best quality and safest vehicles possible and being the automaker with the most TSP and TSP+ ratings is ultimately gratifying.”

This is just one of many accomplishments for the Korean automaker so far this year. Just last month, J.D. Power named Kia the Top Mass Market Brand for the fifth year in a row and in June, Autotrader deemed Kia’s CPO program one of the top 10 in the country. There’s no doubt the awards will keep rolling in for Kia throughout the rest of the year.
