Tips for Off-Roading on Rocky Terrains

If you’re an off-road enthusiast, you know how important it is to plan for the different obstacles and hazards you may encounter on each of your journeys. If the hazards on your next off-roading adventure will include rock-strewn paths, make sure to familiarize yourself with the following tips for handling rocky terrains.

Select the right car
Many vehicles are not designed for tackling rocky terrains, so ensure yours is up for the challenge well in advance of your next adventure. Your car needs to have a good suspension and plenty of ground clearance to avoid damage. If you’re concerned about your vehicle’s height, get it lifted prior to off-roading.

Adjust the tire pressure
Before driving on pavement, it’s wise to check that your vehicle’s tire pressure is within the range specified in your owner’s manual. However, before driving on a rough path, you should actually reduce the tire pressure to about 20 psi. This allows your tires to have a better grip on the rocks.
Make a plan
While it can be fun to go on a spontaneous adventure, it’s a good idea to know what obstacles you’re going to face ahead of time. Research the location you want to visit and map out which path you want to take to avoid unnecessary hazards.

Keep a consistent speed
While driving on rocky terrains, stick to a slow, stable speed. A lower speed makes it easier to stay in control and have traction during the drive. Just make sure you also have enough momentum to get over the rocks.
Don’t stop
If your vehicle comes to a complete stop while climbing over rocks, you may have difficulty restarting it, especially if you’re driving up a steep incline. That’s why you should avoid stopping your vehicle when possible.
