Toyota Camry TRD Prototype

Toyota is not giving up on the passenger car. The automaker has just announced it is making fast, high-performance versions of the Camry and Avalon, which will receive new TRD models for the 2020 model year.

Designed in Calty by Toyota Racing Development, the Camry TRD and Avalon TRD will boast aerodynamic-enhanced exteriors and sportier powertrains, giving enthusiasts the track-ready performance they’ve always wanted from some of the world’s best-selling cars.

Both will be powered by Toyota’s 301-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6, paired with an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters and sport mode. A specially-tuned cat-back dual exhaust will make the Camry TRD and Avalon TRD sound more attractive as well.

The two cars will benefit from a completely overhauled suspension package that focuses on improving handling agility, steering precision, and body control. Meanwhile, an aerodynamic body kit will include side aero skirts, a rear diffuser and front splitter, and trunk lid spoiler for more downforce and head-turning potential. The brakes will be larger as well.

Toyota says the Camry TRD will be 44 percent stiffer at the front and 67 percent stiffer at the rear than the regular Camry. Both cars will also get black sport seats with red accents, TRD embroidered headrests, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, and red seatbelts.

TRD engineers are testing the cars extensively at various locations, including the Toyota Arizona Proving Ground, MotorSport Ranch in Texas, and Higashi-Fuji Proving Ground in Japan.

The 2020 Toyota Camry TRD and Avalon TRD will be available to customers in fall 2019.
