Twin-Turbo V6 for Next-Generation Ford Ranger? Maybe!
A rumor out of the Land Down Under suggests that there may be a twin-turbo V6 offered with the next-generation Ford Ranger. According to Wheels, a source at the Blue Oval’s You Yangs proving ground has confirmed the availability of the 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel and twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 for the new Ranger, which is expected to bow for the 2021 model year with a new look.

It’s noted in Wheels’ story that the twin-turbo V6 is likely being tested largely for availability in the North American market. This would be consistent with a report from last August in which Ford Asia Pacific VP of Product Development Trevor Worthington told another Australian publication that Ford wouldn’t be interested in selling a V6-powered Ranger in the region because “the vast majority of the 200 markets that we sell Ranger, and when I say a vast majority I mean 99 percent, are all diesel markets.” One market that is certainly not a diesel market: MURICA.
It’s not outside the realm of possibility that the American-spec Ranger would also be offered with the 3.0-liter Power Stroke. This would give Ford a leg up in competition against the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado, both of which feature diesel engine options.
There’s also the possibility that the Ranger Raptor is making the leap stateside with the next generation, and the twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 would be a likely candidate with its output of 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.
Ford was naturally mum when reached for comment by Wheels, saying “We have nothing to share just yet about what’s next.” If the next-gen Ranger is slated for the 2021 model year, you can expect something to be shared at some point within the next 12 months or so.
