Toyota Driver Carl Edwards Wins NASCAR Race at Bristol
Carl Edwards drove his No. 19 Toyota Camry racecar to victory in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“We didn’t have any trouble, and that’s just a testament to everyone at the shop and whole team,” Edwards told the Associated Press. “It’s really awesome to have a win so we can really have fun and focus on the championship.”
The race at Bristol was slowed by the caution flag 15 times for a total 102 laps. Edwards was actually the only member of the Joe Gibbs Racing Team not to experience tire issues, as his teammates Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth both connected with the wall after experiencing tire malfunctions.
“We just keep blowing right front tires,” Kenseth told Fox Sports, “I don’t know why.”
Edwards led 276 of 500 laps and he drove away from the field on the final restart to earn his first win of the 2016 NASCAR season. Chevrolet driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished runner-up for the second consecutive week, followed by fellow Team Chevy drivers Kurt Busch and Chase Elliot. Trevor Bayne was the highest finishing Ford driver in fifth place, while fan favorite Danica Patrick came in 25th.
After earning his 26th career win, Edwards did his customary backflip off his Toyota racecar. The victory also gave Edwards an automatic berth in NASCAR’s playoffs.
The next race for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will take place at Richmond International Raceway on April 24th. The race is scheduled to begin at 1 pm ET.
