2016 Mazda Miata Confirmed for September 3 Debut
If you have one of those leather-bound date books (and, these days, who doesn’t), you need to go get it out of your underwear drawer right now. Open it to September 3, and in big letters, just write the word MIATA. It’s been officially announced that the all-new 2016 Mazda Miata—like the whole shebang and not just the chassis—will be revealed at a special event in Monterey, California.
If your ears are as keen as Jalopnik’s Chris Perkins, you might note the sweet sound of forced induction that suggests the 2016 Mazda Miata will boast a turbocharged engine. Of course, we won’t know that for sure until fall begins, so if summer wants to just go right ahead and blow right past us what with its sticky heat and all, we’d be just fine with that.
“We’re excited to make this official, to announce that the newest member of the MX-5 Miata family will be arriving soon,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), in a press release. “Along with our colleagues around the world, we continue to celebrate the MX-5’s 25th anniversary and look forward to sharing even more news in the near future.”
Mazda will be debuting the 2016 Miata at three simultaneous global events, including events in Japan and Spain.
The reveals will be followed by the September 5-7 Miatas at Mazda Raceway event, where the 2016 MX-5 will line up alongside more than a thousand current and classic Miatas at Laguna Seca.
We’ve got less than two months to go, people. The 2016 Mazda Miata is almost upon us. Commence rejoicing.
