2016 Subaru Outback Overview
The Outback is a staple in the Subaru lineup. The 2015 redesign did not disappoint, and Subaru’s continued efforts at improving the Outback each year are evident in the 2016 model.
The 2016 Subaru Outback is available in four distinct trim levels, including the 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, and 3.5R Limited.

What’s New for the 2016 Subaru Outback?
Though the Outback went through a total redesign for 2015, the 2016 model does see some improvements over last year. For example, the Outback gains packages for the SUBARU STARLINK system. Speaking of options, safety is upgraded with optional EyeSight. Limited models (2.5i and 3.5R) benefit from retuned shock absorbers, and steering was retuned across all trims; ultimately, the new 2016 Outback should give a smoother ride with smarter handling.

2016 Subaru Outback Performance
The 2016 Subaru Outback is largely powered by a 2.5-liter DOHC aluminum-alloy 16-valve horizontally opposed four-cylinder BOXER engine with Dual Active Valve Control that puts out 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Only the 3.5R Limited takes power from a 3.6-liter DOHC aluminum-alloy 24-valve horizontally opposed six-cylinder BOXER engine with Dual Active Valve Control. This powertrain is good for 256 horsepower 247 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed Lineatronic Continuously Variable Transmission.
All models are built on Subaru’s famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive platform and benefit from X-MODE traction assist, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Traction Control, Active Torque Vectoring, and Incline Start Assist. The 2.5i models can tow up to 2,700 pounds, but the 3.6R ups the ante to 3,000.

2016 Subaru Outback Efficiency
Subaru’s all-wheel-drive platform does hurt its models in terms of efficiency, but only slightly. Models powered by the 2.5-liter BOXER still manage 25 miles per gallon in the city and up to 33 miles per gallon on the highway. Efficiency declines significantly for the 3.6-liter-powered Outback, at 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
