If you plan to have your pup accompany you on the open road, family-friendly vehicles that offer ample cargo space, a comfortable interior, and security are good options, according to U.S. News & World Report writer John M. Vincent.

The 2018 Kia Soul secures the number one spot on the list due to its low ground clearance, expansive cargo area, and boxy silhouette, which affords plenty of space to house medium-size crates, reports Vincent.

“Dog owners should look for vehicles with interiors that are easy to keep clean, don’t sit so high that your dog can injure themselves jumping in or out, and have ways to keep dogs secure,” he writes. “Dog-friendly features include multi-zone automatic temperature controls, low floors, air suspension, and built-in window shades.”

“There’s ample storage under the rear floor to stow items that you don’t want your pet to get into, or leashes and toys for those trips to the dog park,” he adds.
