The new performance-based Corvette model finished the raceway's 4.1-mile Grand Course West with a time of 2:37.25

This little red Corvette certainly did not slow down

When most automakers want to showcase the abilities of their latest performance vehicles, they take those vehicles to the Nürburgring motorsports complex in Germany. On the other hand, if automakers want to demonstrate the abilities of their vehicles somewhere stateside, one of the most popular available venues is the Virginia International Raceway.

That’s where the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 recently set a lap record.

With vehicle dynamics engineer Jim Mero behind the wheel, the Corvette ZR1 coupe completed the 4.1-mile Grand Course West at the Virginia International Raceway with a time of 2:37.25. That’s a new lap record for the Virginia-based raceway.

The Corvette ZR1 in question came equipped with the available ZTK Performance Package. Said package includes an adjustable carbon-fiber High Wing, Magnetic Ride Control tuning, and a front splitter with carbon-fiber end caps.

Even before its official release, the Corvette ZR1 is already making a name for itself

Powering the Corvette ZR1 was the exclusive LT5 6.2-liter supercharged engine. That engine can produce 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque, thanks to a more efficient intercooled supercharger system.

Chevrolet didn’t even expect to set a record when they brought the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 to the Virginia International Raceway. Instead, the Corvette ZR1 was simply due for validation testing.

“The Corvette ZR1’s lap record at VIR, arguably America’s most challenging road course, is a testament to its supercar status,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain for GM. “On the racetrack, the ZR1 can compete with any supercar — at any price.”

Sales for the 2019 Corvette ZR1 will begin this spring with a suggested retail price of $119,995. The ZTK Performance Package will be available for the added cost of $2,995.
