Australia is such a vast country that sometimes it seems that the best option is to take the quickest route from one place to another. However, doing this means that you miss out on some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

If you really want to see Australia, the best way to do so is by taking a road trip. You can even hire a campervan so that you can stop at camp sites along the way, whenever you choose to. Take a look at campervan hire websites like DriveNow to find the best vehicle for your trip. Here are five epic Australia road trips that you may want to take in your campervan.

The Big Lap

This is the ultimate Australian road trip. The route follows Highway One which links seven major Australian cities. It’s basically a trip around the whole country.

It’s worth saying that you need to have plenty of time to complete this trip. It takes at least 6 months to do the entire journey. However, if you can spare the time, it’s an incredible trip you will never forget. You get to travel through remote outback rainforests and large cities, taking in pristine beaches along the way.

Obviously, there is plenty to see and do in major cities like Sydney. But don’t forget to take a detour and see sights including Uluru and Alice Springs. This really is the road trip of a lifetime.

The Great Ocean Road

Travelling along The Great Ocean Road is one of the most famous road trips in Australia. The main reason for this is the stunning coastline that you can experience along the way.

The road is a total of 243 km in length and passes stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and sights such as the Twelve Apostles, of which only eight remain. If you love history, don’t forget to stop off at Loch Ard Gorge to see the wreck of a 19th century ship.

The East Coast of Tasmania

This road trip takes you from the Tasmanian capital of Hobart to the beautiful Bay of Fires. You follow the coastline on your trip so you can stop off along the way and taste some of the delicious seafood that has been sourced locally.

The stunningly beautiful scenery is the main reason why this road trip is so popular. You can stop off and walk along any of the pristine beaches or check out the local wildlife. This is a tranquil and historic part of the world where you can make some amazing memories.

Perth to Ningaloo

One of the best things about this road trip is that you can start by spending some time in the incredible city of Perth. You can sample the nightlife and spend some time exploring the museums and parks before you head off on the rest of your journey.

This drive takes you 1,200 kilometres from Perth to Exmouth along the stunning coastline. You can experience the Pinnacles Desert and stop off to spend some time swimming with dolphins. If you travel between June and September you will get to see an array of beautiful wild flowers along the way.

Great Alpine Road, Victoria

Along this route, you will travel through mountain ranges and lush green valleys. This is wine country, so ensure that you have enough time to stop off at some vineyards on your journey. You should also give yourself enough time to visit some of the local towns including Beechworth and Bright.

There are also many activities which you can experience during this trip. During the warmer months, hiking, horse riding and fishing are popular. When the weather is colder there is excellent skiing at the alpine village of Mt Hotham.

Taking any of these road trips gives you the opportunity to see Australia at its best.
