Driving is a necessary part of daily life. In fact, more than 90 percent of Americans drive to work (per the Brookings Institute). Unfortunately, car design doesn’t always move forward with larger, wider drivers in mind.

The need for cars that heavier people can drive safely and comfortably isn’t just theoretical. According to CDC statistics from 2013-2014, nearly 38 percent of Americans are obese, and nearly 71 percent are overweight. Meanwhile, Edmunds reports that obese drivers face much higher risks behind the wheel.

For drivers who are overweight or obese, here’s a look at five cars that provide plenty of hip room to accommodate their size, along with adequate leg room and head room for those who are also taller than average.

The Fit also provides 41.4 inches of front leg room and 39.5 inches of front head room, both of which are equal to what’s available in many larger vehicles.
