[PHOTOS] Toyota Hilux Makes European Debut in Geneva
The Geneva Motor Show is currently happening over in Switzerland, and automakers from across the globe are showing off their newest models. Alongside the world debut of the C-HR crossover, Toyota brought the popular Hilux pickup to the show for its European debut.
Photos of the Euro-spec Hilux were revealed last September, but the truck hasn’t actually set foot tire in Europe until now. The Hilux is powered by a new Global Diesel (GD) 2.4-liter turbo diesel engine that features stop/start technology for increased fuel efficiency. Altogether, this engine pumps out 148 bhp at 3,400 rpm, and 400 Nm (approximately 295 lb-ft) of torque between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm. Fuel economy ratings have been improved by 9% to 39.8 mpg (that’s about 33 mpg US), while CO2 emissions come in at 187 g/km.

Toyota will offer the Hilux with a choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive. FWD systems come mated to a six-speed manual transmission, while the AWD models have the option of a six-speed automatic transmission. Both options have been redesigned and now provide a smoother and quieter ride.
Now we come to one of the real reasons people choose to drive trucks: off-road capability. The Hilux rides on an all-new ladder-frame chassis, which provides the truck with a 20% increase in torsional rigidity. The truck’s leaf spring and twin shock absorber rear suspension has also been revised, making the ride smoother than ever before, even when you’re trekking off the beaten path. In plain English, the new Hilux is better than ever before when it comes to ride comfort and off-road prowess.
Aesthetics-wise, the new Hilux sees a redesigned front end that features a unified upper grille and headlight design, as well as a new larger lower grille and a deeper bumper. Additionally, a lower rear bumper makes it easier to access the truck bed when the tailgate is closed. Maximum cargo width has improved from 1,544 mm to 1,645 mm, which makes the new Hilux a class leader in this area. Toyota has added three new exterior color choices, including Hydro Blue, Orange Spice, and Volcano Red.
Inside, the pickup truck boasts new features like a tablet-like 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which has been moved closer to the front seats for added ease of use. Depending on trim level, the new Hilux offers hard-wearing fabric seats, soft-textured fabric seats, or full leather seats.
In addition to the Hilux, Toyota premiered the C-HR crossover and the Proace Verso in Geneva this week.
