BMW loaned the Victoria Highway Patrol two 625-horsepower BMW M5 Competitions for usage as highway interceptors. Since they’ve been loaned to the police, they haven’t cost taxpayers the $230,000 AUD sticker price. Of course, it’ll be a different story if they get wrecked during their 12-month service stint.

The BMW M5 on patrol
These cars aren’t just for show — just like Dubai’s famous Porsche 918 Spyder police car, the BMW M5s are fully outfitted as patrol vehicles. In other words, the Victoria Highway Patrol can take full advantage of the M5’s 4.4-liter, twin-turbo, 625-horsepower V8 to enforce the rules of the road.
While that sounds fun, the Victoria Highway Patrol will try to keep these M5s for “light duties” and use them for demonstrative purposes. Hopefully, no revenge-crazed patrolman goes rogue, steals an interceptor, and retreats to the wasteland to dish out vengeance upon lawless, post-apocalyptic biker gangs. That’s right — I couldn’t get through this article without a Mad Max reference.

Seeking replacements
These M5s won’t be the only BMW interceptors in Australia — there are a number of BMW 530d sedans currently employed by Australian law enforcement, alongside the Subaru Liberty, Kia Stinger, and Chrysler 300 SRT. Why so many different cars? Across Australia, law enforcement officials are seeking replacements for their aging (but iconic) Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores.
Still, I can’t help but wonder what will happen to all of those soon-to-be-decommissioned Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores. Hey, um, Victoria Highway Patrol? If you’ve got an aging Ford Falcon that you want taken off your hands, feel free to send it my way. I’ll give it a loving home and a snazzy new paint job.
