Mazda discontinued the CX-3 in the United States five years ago and ended the Mazda2 in the market more than a decade ago. Despite their absence in America, both compact models continue to be sold in other regions where smaller vehicles remain in demand.

The automaker is now preparing future versions of these entry-level models, though the company has acknowledged that limited research and development resources mean other vehicles are being prioritized first.

Mazda Confirms Next-Generation MAZDA2 and CX-3

Mazda has confirmed that new generations of the Mazda2 hatchback and CX-3 SUV are planned. According to Motor1, the information comes from an interview with Drive in which Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said that “there will be newer generation models.”

Bhindi explained that Mazda has a priority list for development projects, which currently includes vehicles such as the new CX-5. He also acknowledged that the two compact models still need updates, but development resources are limited and projects cannot be completed at the same time.

He stated that the company does not have unlimited research and development capacity and must decide which models are developed first.

New Models Unlikely Before 2027

The next-generation Mazda2 and CX-3 are not expected to arrive soon. It is unlikely that the two new compact models will be introduced before 2027 due to Mazda’s development priorities and resource allocation.

The delay reflects Mazda’s strategy of focusing first on higher-priority models before updating its smallest vehicles. The company continues to sell both compact models in certain markets, which allows it to keep them in its lineup while new versions are being prepared.

Future Models May Use X-Coupe Design Influence

When the next-generation Mazda2 and CX-3 arrive, both models will likely continue sharing the same platform. The future versions are expected to take design inspiration from the X-Coupe concept, a five-door compact hatchback that showcased an evolution of Mazda’s Kodo design language.

Inside, the concept featured a driver-focused cabin with a flat-bottom steering wheel and no large dashboard screen. The interior design was described as sporty and similar in spirit to the current Mazda2.

Mazda is expected to reveal more information about its smallest vehicles in the coming years, although the models are not expected to return to the United States market.
