The announcement follows the recent debut of BYD’s Flash Charging system and Blade Battery 2.0, initially introduced on premium vehicles. The Chinese automaker is now extending that same technology to higher-volume models as it looks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive EV market.

The Yuan Plus, known as the Atto 3 outside China, is among BYD’s most important global models. Its update was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, where the company presented a third-generation version featuring both performance and charging improvements.

Flash Charging Expands from Luxury to Mass Market

BYD first deployed its Flash Charging system in high-end vehicles such as the Yangwang U7 and the Denza Z9 GT. According to statements reported by Electrek, the Denza model, recently opened for orders in Europe starting at €115,000, about $134,500, serves as the company’s international launch platform for the technology.

The system delivers charging power of up to 1,500 kW, allowing compatible vehicles to recharge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. A near full charge, from 10% to 97%, takes around nine minutes. Even in extreme cold conditions of -30°C, the process only extends to 12 minutes for a 20% to 97% recharge.

BYD executive vice president Stella Li described the rollout as introducing the principle of “Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3” to global markets, emphasizing consistency across different climates.

Upgraded Yuan Plus Gains New Battery Options and Range

The third-generation Yuan Plus now integrates the same Blade Battery technology and Flash Charging capability. The model will be offered with two battery packs: 57.545 kWh and 68.547 kWh.

These configurations correspond to CLTC-rated driving ranges of 540 km (335 miles) and 630 km (391 miles). The updated vehicle also features increased dimensions, measuring 4,665 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,770 mm.

Despite the size increase, the electric crossover remains slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y. The rear-mounted electric motor has also been upgraded, with outputs available in 268 hp (200 kW) and 322 hp (240 kW).

Slowing Sales Push BYD to Reinforce Key Model

The Yuan Plus has been a strong performer globally. Data compiled by Cleantechnica, shows it ranked as the 13th best-selling electric vehicle worldwide in 2025, with 223,906 units sold.

Still, its momentum has weakened in China amid growing competition from lower-cost domestic rivals. The updated model reflects BYD’s response, focusing on faster charging, extended range, and improved features to regain consumer interest.

The rollout of Flash Charging to a high-volume vehicle signals a broader strategy shift. Rather than limiting new technology to flagship models, BYD is bringing it into the core of its lineup, where competition is most intense and margins are tighter.
