Chinese automakers have increasingly emphasized technology as a way to strengthen their position in the automotive industry. Alongside advances in EV battery development, in-car systems, advanced driver-assistance technologies, and autonomous driving features, some manufacturers have also invested heavily in improving off-road capabilities.
Among those brands, BYD has drawn attention with the Yangwang U8. While videos of the SUV floating on water have circulated widely, recent footage offers a closer look at how the model performs in more traditional off-road conditions.
A Video Focused on Extreme Off-Road Testing
According to Autoblog, a video posted on YouTube by CarForLife shows the Yangwang U8 being driven across a variety of challenging surfaces and obstacles. The footage contains no commentary, relying instead on music and visual demonstrations of the vehicle’s capabilities.
The creator was likely invited to a media showcase and given access to footage of the U8 undergoing testing. Throughout the video, the SUV is shown tackling different terrain types and steep inclines, both while climbing and descending. The material highlights the apparent ease with which the vehicle handles these demanding conditions.

BYD Uses Dedicated Facilities To Test Its Vehicles
Chinese manufacturers invest heavily in research and development, and that investment extends to dedicated proving grounds. the Zhengzhou All-terrain Circuit in China is one such facility where BYD vehicles are evaluated across multiple types of terrain.
Last year, several models from BYD and its associated brands were tested across multiple surfaces. The Yangwang U8 attracted particular attention during the event when it was driven aggressively up a simulated sand dune.
The dune is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. The demonstration was presented as one of the highlights of the showcase and served as a practical display of the SUV’s capabilities.
Positioned Against Established Off-Road Rivals
Chinese manufacturers often seek to position themselves as disruptors within the automotive industry. In the case of the Yangwang U8, the vehicle is compared with established models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and Range Rover.
The U8 stands out on paper with more than 1,000 horsepower, a float mode that allows it to traverse water, and a combination of modern technology and luxury-focused features. The video highlighted by the publication is presented as evidence that the SUV is also intended to compete as a serious off-road vehicle.
Yangwang, a sub-brand of BYD, has also continued to expand its lineup. The article notes that the company recently introduced the all-electric U9 hypercar, whose extreme version recorded a Nürburgring lap time of less than seven minutes.
