The Jetour G700 is the latest example of how Chinese automakers continue to expand the capabilities of electrified vehicles beyond traditional road use. The model follows earlier amphibious concepts such as BYD’s YangWang U8, which gained attention in 2023 for its ability to float in water for up to 30 minutes.

Chery showcased the G700’s water-driving capabilities several times over recent months, placing particular emphasis on the vehicle’s stability technology and off-road positioning. The SUV is roughly comparable in size to a Lexus GX, though its mechanical setup differs substantially from conventional luxury off-roaders sold in Western markets.

Chery Demonstrated the SUV Crossing the Minjiang River

During a recent public demonstration, the Jetour G700 crossed the Minjiang River in approximately 10 minutes without reportedly taking on water. According to InsideEVs, the specific version used for the crossing was the “Ark Edition,” a top-spec trim equipped with built-in propellers designed to propel the vehicle through water.

Chery stated that the amphibious system is intended strictly for emergency situations, particularly flash floods, rather than recreational boating. The automaker also said the SUV uses an advanced gyroscopic stability system to remain level while floating.

The company has repeatedly highlighted the feature during promotional events in recent months, presenting the vehicle as part of China’s growing new-energy vehicle segment, commonly referred to as NEVs.

The Jetour G700 Combines a Gas Engine With Two Electric Motors

The Jetour G700 uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain made up of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors. The combined system produces 892 horsepower and 837 pound-feet of torque.

The SUV is also equipped with three locking differentials, reinforcing its positioning as an off-road-focused vehicle. Chery pairs the hybrid system with a 34.1-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery pack supplied by CATL.

Using the WLTC testing procedure, the battery can provide up to 62 miles, or 100 kilometers, of electric-only driving range. With a full fuel tank included, Chery advertises a total combined driving range of up to 620 miles, equivalent to 1,000 kilometers.

Fast-Charging Capability Is Built Into the 800-Volt Platform

The Jetour G700 supports fast charging through an 800-volt electrical architecture. The battery pack can accept charging speeds of up to 170 kilowatts.

Chery says this allows the battery to recharge from 20% to 80% in roughly 10 minutes. The battery pack is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle and uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry, a format increasingly common among Chinese electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The amphibious demonstration and charging specifications were both presented as part of Chery’s broader showcase of the G700’s capabilities in the rapidly evolving Chinese NEV market.
