The feature was not presented during Apple’s WWDC26 keynote, making it one of the less-publicized additions included in the upcoming software release. Its existence was instead highlighted in a developer-focused video and later reported by MacRumors.
The update marks a change in how video content is accessed through CarPlay. Until now, iPhone users could display videos on compatible vehicle screens through AirPlay, effectively using the infotainment display as an external screen. With iOS 27, video browsing and playback will be integrated directly into CarPlay itself.
Carplay Gains Built-in Video Browsing and Playback
The most notable addition in the update is the ability to access and watch videos directly through the CarPlay interface. According to MacRumors, users will no longer need to rely on AirPlay to mirror video content from their iPhone to a vehicle’s display.
Instead, CarPlay will handle video browsing natively through supported applications. The change is designed to make the experience more seamless by reducing the need to interact with the phone while using the infotainment system.
Apple is not removing all restrictions, though. Video playback will only be available when the vehicle is stationary. Once motion is detected, the system will automatically switch any ongoing stream to audio-only playback.

Support Depends on Both Apps and Vehicles
The new capability will not be universally available from day one. Apple says applications must update the way they manage video content in order to support the feature.
Vehicle compatibility is also required. Cars must support video sharing before the functionality can be used through CarPlay.
Apple has not released a list of compatible vehicles. As a result, users will have to determine whether their vehicle supports the feature once iOS 27 becomes available to the public.
The rollout has already begun in testing form. A developer beta is currently available, while a public beta is scheduled for next month. Apple plans to release iOS 27 to all users in September.
The Update Also Introduces Siri AI and Other Carplay Improvements
Video playback is accompanied by several other changes aimed at improving the CarPlay experience.
Apple is adding a mini-player for audio within apps, allowing audio controls to remain accessible while using other functions. The company is also introducing audio scrubbing controls within the “Now Playing” interface.
The update includes improvements to wireless CarPlay reliability as well as enhanced GPS accuracy and navigation heading information.
Drivers using an iPhone 15 Pro or newer device will also gain access to Siri AI through CarPlay. Apple describes Siri AI as a more intelligent version of its voice assistant that can provide more personalized responses to more complex questions.
Together, these additions form part of the broader iOS 27 update, which Apple is currently testing ahead of its public release later this year.
