The development comes at a time when wagons remain a niche segment in the United States, a market traditionally dominated by SUVs and crossovers. Despite that context, BMW has found notable interest in the wagon version of its latest high-performance M5.
BMW executives have been surprised by customer demand for the M5 Touring, a model that initially exceeded sedan sales before settling into an almost even split between the two body styles. That performance has prompted the company to evaluate whether other Touring models could find an audience in America.
M5 Touring Sales Exceed BMW’s Expectations
BMW’s latest M5 Touring has delivered results that appear to have surpassed the automaker’s internal expectations. Sales of the wagon initially outpaced those of the M5 sedan before the two versions reached a near 50:50 sales distribution.
The balanced demand has become a significant indicator for BMW as it assesses the viability of wagon models in a market where such vehicles remain relatively uncommon. The strong reception has helped demonstrate that a segment of American buyers is actively interested in high-performance wagons.
The company views the M5 Touring’s performance as a positive outcome and a potential reference point for future product decisions.

BMW Says It Will Examine Additional Touring Opportunities
Speaking to Bimmer Life, BMW North America’s Vice President of Product Management, Michael Keller, said the company is open to studying further wagon offerings for the U.S. market.
“There is momentum in the market… So to your question in the future, we will look into Touring concepts where it makes sense for the US market, because at the moment we are quite happy with the M5,” Keller said.
According to Bimmer Life, BMW’s interest in exploring additional Touring models is linked to opportunities to offer products that stand apart from competitors while responding to customer enthusiasm for wagons. Keller’s comments indicate that any future decision would depend on whether a specific model makes sense for the American market.

Customer Demand Has Kept the M3 Touring in the Conversation
BMW is aware of customer campaigns calling for the M3 Touring to be sold in the United States. The manufacturer has taken note of petitions from enthusiasts seeking the arrival of the performance wagon.
The company previously described the decision to bring the M5 Touring to the U.S. instead of the M3 Touring as a “logical decision.” At the same time, continued customer interest in a five-door performance model has kept discussion surrounding the M3 Touring alive.
For now, BMW’s public position remains focused on the success of the M5 Touring and on evaluating future Touring concepts where they align with market conditions in the United States.
