Toyota is developing the GR GT as a road-legal race car while simultaneously preparing a dedicated GT3 version built to comply with FIA regulations. The two models share the same development program but feature notable mechanical and aerodynamic differences.
Toyota first unveiled the GR GT and the GR GT3 in December 2025. The road-going model is expected to go on sale in late 2027, with engineering focused on combining race-inspired performance with road usability.
Track Footage Reveals the Sound of Toyota’s New GT3 Contender
A new Instagram video shared by user khuritzz and the UK’s Car Magazine captures the Toyota GR GT3 circulating on track. The short clip shows the race car driving alongside a bus before making several brief acceleration runs.
The footage allows the car’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine to be heard clearly. Alongside the deep exhaust note, the recording also captures the characteristic whine produced by the twin turbochargers. Toyota designed this engine to meet FIA GT3 regulations.
Road Car and Race Car Share the Same Project
Toyota describes the GR GT as a road-legal race car. The production version is targeting 640 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.
The road-going GR GT features an all-aluminum frame, a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission, and body panels made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and aluminum. Inside, the cabin adopts a driver-focused layout and includes carbon-backed Recaro bucket seats.

The GT3 Version Receives Dedicated Racing Hardware
While the road car and race car are closely related, the GR GT3 incorporates several changes intended for competition.
The GT3 model features more aggressive aerodynamic components, including a front splitter, a large rear wing, and fender louvers. It also replaces the road car’s eight-speed automatic transmission with a sequential gearbox.
Motor1 describes the GR GT3 as looking and sounding like a proper race car, highlighting both its appearance and the character of its twin-turbocharged V8 as seen in the latest track footage.
